Work History

Scientist

Johnson & Johnson
10.2011 - Current
  • Performed immunogenicity study to evaluate potential suppressive activity of viral proteins on activated human PBMC (proofed the importance of using low-endotoxin materials).
  • Set up killing assays to evaluate bispecific antibodies and performed troubleshooting in the usage of correct backbone of the antibodies.
  • Developed different primary cellular assays to support candidate TLR (small molecule) agonist program: these included B cell maturation/proliferation, NK cell activation, dendritic cell activation by flow cytometry and cytokine secretion (luminex & ELISA): evaluated interspecies and intercompound differences
  • Developed primary cellular assay to evaluate checkpoint blockade candidate molecules (PDL-1 anatagonists).
  • Wrote research papers, technical reports to support IB, electronic labnote book reports.
  • Leaded and organized Phase0 study to compare cytokine responses towards TLR agonists between healthy donors and HBV patients. Worked together with statistician to analyze the data..
  • Trained new employees on areas of technical expertise and compliance issues relevant to lab setting.
  • Supported early develop team by generating data from in-licensed TLR compound. Presented data and conclusion to early development team.
  • Compared T-cell responses of chronic HBV patients with resolvers. This included troubleshooting of data generated by CRO, attending follow-up meetings, re-analysis of the data together with statistical department, presenting findings to managment.
  • Collaborated with statisticians and programmers to streamline cytokine analysis from different platforms (ELISA, luminex, mesocale) (cytokine analysis tool)
  • Established Cell Transfer Service together with Janssen Biobank Beerse
  • Collaborate with CRO's and give input in design of experiments and followed up on results
  • Coaching/leading junior scientists, students
  • Read literature and attend international conferences related to scientific area of expertise to remain current in knowledge

Associate scientist

Tibotec
03.2008 - 09.2011
  • Developed IFN-alpha screening assay with primary blood cells as secondary (closer to the clinic) read-out for assessing activity of TLR agonists
  • Actively participated in finding alternatives to ELISA to detect IFN-alpha
  • Brought in expertise of working with primary cells (peripheral blood mononuclear cells, PBMC)
  • Primary cell-based assay development to find and characterize TLR agonist small molecules
  • Scouted good source of human blood, organized blood supply for all Tibotec lab technicians
  • Remained up-to-date with flow cytometry: attended various courses.
  • Documented changes during experiments, noting unexpected issues arising during research activities.

Honors Awards

  • Encore Award @Janssen: Successful implementation of blood transfer service for Beerse site, active collaboration and giving input in IMMO team meetings, support for the TLR studies: set up of all in vitro readouts, timely communication & analysis
  • Implementation of the Cell transfer Service together with Biobank Janssen Beerse
  • Leadership Award (2019): For all the TLR in vitro work and development of the cytokine analysis tool
  • Inspire Award (2020): Settting up and validation of the immune checkpoint screen
  • Inspire Award (2021): For the NME nomination of Janssen's novel TLRx agonist
  • Pepal Leadership Training (2023): participated in a Leadership program in a team with people of Uganda and Janssen, to improve HIV awareness
and reduce stigma amongst adolescents in the rural Kabwooya area . The program was very inspiring besides some challenges: collaborating with people with different cultural backgrounds, trying to understand the health care situation, interact with different stakeholders (District leaders, care givers, health care personal and YAPS (young adolescent and adult peer support), preparing pitch presentation and final presentation to District leaders to sustain our ideas.
