Summary

A motivated bioscience engineer with a passion for climate change, its effects on the ocean, and exploring these phenomena through computer modeling and machine learning. I am currently pursuing a PhD focused on developing high-resolution machine learning tools for the coastal carbon cycle. My research aims to improve our understanding of how extreme events — such as marine heatwaves — influence the carbon cycle, initially in coastal regions and ultimately on a global scale. Outside of research, I enjoy traveling, scuba diving, and seeking new adventures and challenges.

Work History

PhD Research Engineer

Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), Belgium
01.2024 - Current
  • PhD candidate at Ghent University and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), supervised by Prof. Dr. Griet Neukermans and Dr. Peter Landschützer. My research focuses on global and coastal ocean carbon fluxes, combining machine learning and Earth System modeling approaches to study how extreme events—such as marine heatwaves and ocean acidification—impact ocean-atmosphere CO₂ exchange. I aim to evaluate and optimize the sea-surface pCO₂ observing system to improve the detection and quantification of these anomalies. My PhD is partly funded by the BERNARDO project and contributes to the EU-funded AI4PEX project.
  • Additional activities alongside my PhD research:
  • Editor, EGU Ocean Sciences Blog
  • Early Career Representative, EGU Ocean Sciences Division
  • Faculty of Sciences Representative (UGent) – AAP/WP (Assistant Academic Staff / Research Staff)
  • Member, Wellbeing & Diversity Team, Faculty of Sciences, UGent
  • Volunteer Teaching Assistant
  • Supervisor of Master's thesis projects
  • Participant in the ICOS Summer School 2025 (Hyytiala Forest Station, Finland); selected for the SOLAS Summer School 2026 (Brazil)
  • Short visit in September 2025 to Prof. McKinley, LEAP Engineering Hub NYC and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
  • Conference participation: Marine Science Day 2025, EGU 2025, ICOS Belgium Science Conference 2025, ESA Ocean Carbon From Space 2025, Ocean Sciences Meeting 2026
  • Science outreach and communication: Science for Pint & Ketnet Ocean Edition documentary (scheduled to air in March/April 2026)

Visiting Research Student

Marine Spatial Ecology Lab, University of Queensland, Australia
01.2023 - 01.2024
  • International collaboration as part of my Master's dissertation: 'Century-long Vulnerability of the Great Barrier Reef to Cyclone Damage Under Climate Change' (awarded 19/20, the highest grade in my year). Conducted under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Peter Mumby from the Marine Spatial Ecology Lab at the University of Queensland and Prof. Dr. Ir. Jana Asselman from the Blue Growth Research Lab at Ghent University. Spent October 2023 to June 2024 at Prof. Dr. Peter Mumby's lab in Queensland.

Community Service & Volunteer Work

  • Humasol and Creating Power, Uganda, Volunteering Engineer, Uganda, 2022, 2023, Selected by Humasol, a student-led non-profit focused on renewable energy, to lead a year-long project in collaboration with three UGent students. The project was carried out in partnership with Creating Power, a non-profit that supports projects worldwide with sustainable social goals through technical support, education, or fundraising. Together, we spent the year designing a wastewater treatment system for Ngobya Primary School in Uganda, which we implemented during the summer of 2023. The system enables water reuse for irrigation — including banana plantations — and toilet flushing. We continue to receive monthly updates on its performance, demonstrating the project's ongoing success.
  • Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC), Borneo, Malaysia, Diving Volunteer, Malaysia, 2022-07, 2022-08, Volunteered at TRACC on Pom Pom Island, Borneo, focusing on diving activities such as coral restoration, coral planting, and controlling Crown-of-Thorns starfish outbreaks. Gained hands-on experience addressing issues like fish bombing and turtle egg poaching, while learning turtle identification techniques and contributing to marine conservation through daily work dives and nightly turtle walks.
