Joyce Oerlemans

Neurology resident with a clinical and academic focus on vascular neurology and stroke research. Completed an interdisciplinary PhD in Neurology and Experimental Psychology (2025). First author of three publications, including work published in Brain (2025) and more recently accepted in Nature Communications (2026). Vascular neurology experience: 

• Weekly participation in outpatient stroke clinics during my PhD under the supervision of a vascular neurologist at Ghent University Hospital.
• Neurology resident with regular clinical rotations on the ESO-certified Stroke Unit at Ghent University Hospital.
• Assessment and management of patients with acute ischemic stroke, including administration of intravenous thrombolysis under supervision, participation in thrombectomy decision-making with interventional neuroradiology
• Assessment and management of patients with hemorraghic stroke, including acute care and consulting with neurosurgery teams.
• Experience in multidisciplinary stroke care, working closely with nursing staff, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and rehabilitation physicians.
• Sub-investigator in multiple multicentre stroke trials (OCEANIC, REVIVE, DISTAL, CHARM, ELAN, CONVINCE).
• Regular participant at the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) and Belgian Stroke Council meetings.
• Active involvement in public engagement and science communication, including presentations on stroke during the Ghent University Hospital Open House Day and the Flemish Day of Science.

Sub-investigator for OCEANIC, REVIVE, DISTAL, CHARM, ELAN, CONVINCE trials at Ghent University Hospital.
